Do the rental cars in Fairbanks have studded tires and are they winterized for the conditions?

They dont have studded tires but winter tyres they do have standard normally or you can add them to your car hire as an EXTRA at STEP3.

Are winter tires sufficient in Fairbanks Alaska in March? We want to drive an hour north to the hot springs. I don't want to take unnecessary risks.

Yes, I was there 4 weeks agon and drove with a rental car with winter tyres. I also drove to the Hot Springs.

No, but you can reserve chains for an additional fee.

Oh awesome. OK, second question. Will it be more expensive to buy coverage at the counter than to pay for it in advance now? I chose a Budget car and I am not sure I want to pay $36 now, unless it's going to cost more later.

Its only 9$ a day when you purchase full cover Insurance online. It is likely to be more expensive at the rental desk and less comprehensive. To see what the price is at the rental desk look here:-

At STEP2 of our 3 step online booking process, to the right of the car photo of your choice, is a link entitled "IMPORTANT INFORMATION". Click on this link and it will open an additional smaller window, where the terms and conditions appertaining to that particular car at your chosen location are displayed.

Proceed to STEP3 where insurance is offered to you. Click on the link "Terms and Conditions" to read the policy. Then select your "state of residence" from the drop down menu. You can proceed by ticking the box "I wish to purchase Rental Car Protector" and follow the payment instructions.
